Role objectives
This role spans a variety of activities ranging from quantitative modelling (e.g. key risk exposure analysis, economic capital forecasting) to operational process analysis (e.g. support new capability development, risk investigation of key processes and activities). The role also provides the opportunity to work closely with all major commercial business units and support functions within the UK but also across GM&T's continental Europe, US and Far East entities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Operational and Enterprise-wide risk management
Support the identification and assessment of major operational risks across core commercial and operational activities
Contribute to the risk oversight and control in relation to new strategic initiatives and operational capability projects
Support commercial teams and support functions to develop controls to mitigate key risks
Conduct risk monitoring and review activity to support ongoing senior oversight of GM&T's operational risk profile
Support senior level engagement on management of key operational risk issues
Conduct statistical modelling to estimate financial exposure from key operational risks
Identify and assess enterprise-wide risk issues across GM&T Group spanning commercial and operational activities. Support the senior level communication and mitigation of enterprise-wide risks in collaboration with commercial teams and support functions
Risk due diligence
Ensure adequate Commercial and Risk Due Diligence occurs across specific structured origination and strategic transactions (e.g. key investments, equity purchases, acquisitions etc.)
Carry out initial risk review to build understanding of the transaction, identify all potential operational and commercial risks and allocate issues arising to the appropriate risk teams; and
Advise the Head of Risk Strategy on major issues and risks and liaise with commercial teams to develop mitigation approaches to ensure successful transaction execution
Economic capital management
Support the economic capital forecasting activities of the Enterprise Risk Team across key transactions and strategic planning activities
Work closely with commercial teams and key risk personnel to develop bespoke models and calculations to forecast economic capital requirements
Support the development and implementation of economic capital monitoring and performance measurement methodologies across all commercial teams and legal entities • Participate in economic capital reporting activities across different entities
Risk capability development
Work collaboratively with the Risk Department Business Service Partners to ensure enterprise-wide and operational risk management supports commercial activities across GM&T Group
Support the identification of risk requirements to support commercial development and maintain risk oversight
Develop and implement risk framework components which support risk management practice across all trading entities, products, activities and locations
Skills & Competencies
We are looking for a candidate with deep commercial knowledge of energy trading market activities and a strong risk management perspective. They should be both an excellent team player who can build strong interdependent relationships and deliver as part of a diverse team, and be able to take individual responsibility for the overall risk management of specific transactions and initiatives. The candidate should also have the ability to manage the design of new processes and the delivery of development initiatives.
Ability to understand complex commercial transactions and identify the key risks and value drivers
Demonstrated quantitative and statistical modelling skills
Project management and delivery
Strong communication skills both written and oral. Adept at building trusting relationships within other departments in order to enlist their participation and support
Understanding of the measurement and reporting of risks
Highly developed analytical abilities as well as a practical sense of what works in complex organisations
Resourceful and tenacious in approaching problems
Energy, determination and judgment and capable of working with multiple stakeholders under tight deadlines
Actively listens to others, shows that they understand and value others views
Able to translate the output of analysis into practical and implementable recommendations

Experience
Significant experience in risk management in an energy trading environment is essential
Experience of reviewing and managing risk within complex contracts
Experience of developing, or assisting with the development, of departmental capability
Expertise in working collaboratively across a range of stakeholders to lead and support process improvement solutions
Project management expertise.
Education
University degree in quantitative subject (2.1 or better preferred)
