Growing in a competitive market

2011 is set to be another year of growth for GM&T. It will undoubtedly be a challenge to continue to ensure we attract and retain the very best talent in an energy trading market. A market that is clearly becoming more competitive for people resources than it has been in recent years.

Organisations are target driven and naturally resourcing play a key role in supporting their plans, whilst operating targets of our own. One of the challenges recruiting in rapidly growing companies is to get onto the front foot and build a proactive solution that enables us to identify and engage with our future employees.   To achieve this we need a flexible and integrated model that has many facets to it.

Last year, on top of headcount growth of over 50% we spent time reviewing and exploring the best opportunities to source the GM&T talent for the future. Partnership is an overused word particularly in the HR and resourcing arena. We have spent time identifying and starting to build relationships with organisations right across the sourcing, attraction and onbaording spectrum. Whilst many organisations toy with a mix of either outsourced or resource heavy in-house recruitment, our aim is to use the best of both. It’s these partnerships that we hope to build and in many cases strengthen that will be paramount for us to achieve growth.

We are excited about the role our extended team can play by coming together to support our hiring needs. In this blog I'll share the challenges of recruiting in organisations such as ours and some of what we do to overcome this. I'm also interested in charting some of the success (I hope) of these partnerships we're building and strengthening across search, media, and our forays into the digital world.

Naturally, a significant part of resourcing is the effective onboarding and ongoing development of talent.  I remember being at a recent employer branding event where  a head of resourcing for a recognised global giant said “I only care about recruitment, once they join its someone else’s responsibly”.  What was most shocking here was not only that he genuinely meant this but that there were nods around the room from some in agreement. At GM&T its paramount that we support the induction and integration of new employees alongside developing and creating opportunities for our existing ones.  As a values driven organisation it’s not just the selection of talented individuals to join us but the successful integration of these people that is key to our strategy and ongoing success.
