GM&T USA
USA: The North American energy market is the largest in the world and we are now building a major marketing and trading business in the US from our Houston office in Texas. In North America, we participate in three key areas: Gas, LNG and Carbon
GAS: In Q4 2009, we began natural gas marketing and trading operations throughout North America. We will focus our efforts on selling gas at the wholesale level to our growing customer base. Our gas supply position includes:
- LNG imports: We have already concluded agreements under which LNG from the Sakhalin-2 LNG project located on the eastern Pacific coast of Russia and will be transported and sold in US markets, commencing in 2009. In addition, we will purchase LNG from other Russian LNG projects, including the planned Shtokman LNG project in the Barents Sea, planned for startup in 2014, as well as short term and spot LNG imports supplied by our affiliate Gazprom Global LNG.
- We are in the process of concluding agreements with various customers under which we will buy gas under firm supply contracts at various liquid hubs across North America, and simultaneously sell gas to these same customers at various liquid hubs in Western Europe. This will enable us to provide gas to North America from the strong supply position held by our affiliates in Europe.
- Pipeline gas purchases: We will purchase gas under short and long term arrangements from numerous counterparties in various locations in North America.
LNG: In order to provide a gateway into the North American gas market for Russian-sourced LNG, we have concluded a number of agreements, and are negotiating others, under which we will lease and control long-term LNG regasification capacity at several locations in North America, as well as associated downstream pipeline capacity. This will enable LNG produced in Russia, and other locations, to be imported into the USA, Mexico and Canada, and sold as gas into the largest gas market in the world.
Carbon
The US carbon trading market is set for massive growth as federal legislation continues its steady march towards completion, and as energy users seek out more efficient ways of managing their environmental responsibilities. In close coordination with our Global Carbon business unit, in January, 2009 we launched our entry into the North American Carbon business. We offer a one-stop shop that combines global market leadership with a local presence. Click here for information on GM&T's USA Carbon activities.
